Riodinid Butterfly

Rettus periander
LepidopteraRiodinidae
Order, Family and Description

Riodinids are tropical butterflies with a reputation for being least understood and extremely varied in color, form and behavior. This one was attracted to minerals and would walk around on the ground in a sunny patch in the middle of the dark forest as if to parade its exquisite coloration. Other riodinids are much more secretive, choosing to sit on the underside of leaves with nothing more than their antennae protruding as you pass by. View the underside of this butterfly.
