Butterfly members of the Order Lepidoptera are characterized by tiny scales that cover their wing surfaces. These arrangement of these scales determine color and pattern characteristic for each species. They also have a coiled tongue called a proboscis, used to imbibe sweet nectar from flowers or minerals from the forest floor. Most butterfly groups fly during daylight hours.
